Written Exposure Therapy

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief, evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms. It involves structured, therapist-guided writing sessions that help individuals process traumatic experiences by putting their thoughts and emotions into words. WET is designed to be a short-term, effective intervention—typically completed in just five sessions—making it accessible and less intensive than traditional trauma therapies.

In WET, clients are invited to write in detail about their traumatic event, focusing on what happened, how it felt, and how it continues to affect them. By doing so, individuals begin to confront and make sense of the trauma, reducing avoidance and emotional distress over time. Unlike some therapies, WET does not require in-session retelling or repeated review of the trauma with the therapist, which can feel more manageable for those who are hesitant to speak about their experience out loud.

Research has shown that Written Exposure Therapy can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms and improve emotional regulation. It offers a respectful, empowering way to process trauma at one’s own pace, with the support of a trained clinician guiding the process.
