Psychological Care for Police, Fire, Paramedic Personnel, and Families

At the Canadian Centre for CBT, we provide specialized psychological services for first responders, including police services, firefighters, paramedics, and their families. Our services are designed to reflect the realities of emergency response work and the cumulative demands of public safety roles.

Our clinicians are experienced in working with individuals exposed to high-risk situations, unpredictable environments, and repeated critical incidents, and routinely support concerns such as operational stress injuries (OSI), trauma-related symptoms, mood and anxiety disorders, burnout, moral injury, and service-related life transitions.

Understanding First Responder Psychological Assessments

Psychological assessments offer a comprehensive picture of mental health functioning and how occupational experiences in emergency services may be affecting wellbeing, work capacity, and daily life. Assessments may involve:

  • In-depth clinical interviews

  • Evidence-based psychological measures

  • Trauma- and stress-specific symptom screening

  • Evaluation of functional impact

  • Written summaries for treatment planning or administrative needs

These assessments are commonly used to:

  • Identify or clarify mental health diagnoses

  • Examine how service-related stressors influence functioning

  • Guide focused, evidence-based treatment

  • Support workplace, benefit, or insurance-related documentation

When a First Responder Assessment May Be Helpful

An assessment may be appropriate if you are:

  • Noticing persistent changes in mood, sleep, or stress tolerance

  • Experiencing difficulties following emergency calls or cumulative exposure

  • Seeking documentation for benefits, WSIB, or disability claims

  • Referred by a physician, employer, or health professional

  • Looking for a clear clinical roadmap for recovery

We routinely assess concerns relevant to first responder roles, including trauma-related conditions, anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, burnout, moral injury, and stress-related impairments.
